Recently the four of us – Sarah, Hailey, our friend Vera, and yours truly – paid a visit to the headquarters of Bolinda Audiobooks in Melbourne. We were amazed to discover that they do everything in their Tullamarine office and warehouse. Everything! Cataloguing audiobooks for libraries across Australia, designing cover artwork, burning the discs, packaging and then distributing the audio CDs, even recording. A fave moment was watching an audiobook in production at the in-house studio. Getting to see Aussie actor Jennifer Vuletic weave her magic with words (and her wonderfully expressive hands!) was so good we had goose bumps. It’s something Sarah and I have dreamt of doing for ages.

For four nerdy booklovers, it was like finding ourselves in Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory – bliss! Joe even burned us a ‘special order’ copy of Lyrebird Hill so we could see his bank of super computers doing their thing. Sarah made me promise not to tell anyone she’d already listened to it a million times, but hey, what’s one more listen?

We met many of the wonderful staff members and here’s Vicki and Ha who have both been with the company for many years.

Bolinda is also the home of BorrowBox, the ingenious app through which you can borrow audiobooks in digital form through your local library – just click and download onto your device wherever you are.

I’ve always been a huge audiobook fan, and so there’s something extra-sweet about having your very own novel brought to life in such a compelling and entertaining way. And it was all the more special getting to meet the dedicated team behind the scenes who make it all happen. Our warmest thanks to Rebecca, Katie, and the inspiring crew at Bolinda for making us so welcome and then sending us home with a goodie bag each that included some great listens and huge blocks of their very own yummy Bolinda chocolate. Willy Wonka would’ve been proud!
